How To get to Katana -> CentOS -> VirtualBox!
(Katana is certified on CentOS)

VirtualBox

Downloaded VirtualBox 4.3.12 for OS X hosts and installed the dmg.
This is the easy part – no fuss, as always with installations on Mac (that is why I love Mac!)

Created a new virtual machine for the CentOS:

Here are my settings during creation:
VM Name: CentOS 6.5
Memory: 4096 MB (default is 512 MB)
Virtual disk storage: VDI, dynamically allocated; location: /Users/shulow/VirtualBox VMs/CentOS 6_5; size: 24 GB (default is 8 GB)

Adjusted settings:
System: Boot order: Hard Disk and shift to the top; Processor: 2 CPUs (default 1); Video Memory: 128 MB, enable 3D Acceleration;
Network: Adaptor1 (default NAT): Bridged Adaptor, en1: Wi-Fi (AirPort); Adaptor2: Bridged Adaptor, en0: Ethernet
* This gives the Guest OS (CentOS in VirtualBox) an internal IP of 192.168.x.x (Class C) with NAT the internal IP is 10.x.x.x (Class A)
* For now I set to Bridged Adaptor as I want to have a separate VPN connection from the host OS (which is my Mac OS); I may try at some point to share the VPN from host to guest OS perhaps!

CentOS

Downloaded CentOS (CentOS-6.5-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso)

Mounted the CentOS ISO to the CD/DVD drive (Settings > Storage: Controller IDE) and launched VM with “Start” started the installation. For now, I installed as “Desktop”. I suppose I could have added EPEL repository, but I didn’t know at that time I need it for VPN pptp plugin.

There was a storage device warning:
The storage device may contain data.
ATA VBOX HARDDISK. 24576.0 MB.
Since this is the 24 GB Virtual disk that I created for this VM, I can safely click “Yes, discard any data”.

Also selected “Use all space” (default is replace existing linux systems).

For the hostname, I put the same hostname as my Mac OSX, because I didn’t know at that time what it meant. Later I changed the hostname after install to “centos”. 🙂

Also created an account shu.

After installation:

Checking network that is OK:

# ping google.com

# ifconfig | grep inet
from here I got my internal IP address as: 198.168.1.74

In Mac OS:
# ssh shu@198.168.1.74

Cool my Mac can communicate with my CentOS!

Hostname:

I renamed the host, so here’s what I do, after looking at CentOS Hostname Change:
Using my trusted editor (what else, but vi, which has been burned into my brain despite Maya):
# su
vi /etc/sysconfig/network
HOSTNAME=centos

# /etc/init.d/network restart

And restarted CentOS.

Updating system using yum:

From my user login, su to root:
$ su
# yum update

Installing useful development tools and header files using yum groupinstall:
# yum groupinstall Base
# yum groupinstall “Development Tools”

VirtualBox Guest Additions

It find it really useful to install the VirtualBox Guest Additions (which is part of the VirtualBox, no need to download) :
Device > Insert Guest Additions CD Image
Then restart the OS.

# cd /media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.3.10_93012
# sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
restart OS

Really nice! Now I can seamlessly go from Mac OS to CentOS in VM, and also have larger screen and fullscreen. Also no more annoying mouse capture and having to CMD click each time to switch between CentOS and Mac OS. 🙂

VPN Client

To setup VPN Client, I need first to install the NetworkManager-pptp plugin, as CentOS NetworkManager does not by default have this plugin.  This requires first installing EPEL repository, as the plugin is not available in CentOS default repositories.  A really good explanation of EPEL is from unixman. EPEL is simply, “Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux”.  I find the Ubuntu VPNClient article to be useful to understand about the NetworkManager plugins, the section Configuring a connection (VPN Management).
Installing EPEL:
Within CentOS, I downloaded EPEL from EPEL Repository Download page, and opened and installed it from within Firefox.
From unixmen I can also do this with command line like so:
# wget http://epel.mirror.net.in/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
# rpm -Uvh epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
Checking the repository now shows EPEL:
ls /etc/yum.repos.d
CentOS-Base.repo       CentOS-Media.repo  epel.repo
CentOS-Debuginfo.repo  CentOS-Vault.repo  epel-testing.repo
Also I can check with:
# yum repolist | grep epel
* epel: mirror.pnl.gov
epel             Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 – x86_64           10,806
After installing EPEL, I did an update:
# yum update

Installing NetworkManager-pptp plugin:
# yum install NetworkManager-pptp

I also installed NetworkManager-openvpn plugin:
# yum install NetworkManager-openvpn

Both plugins are in EPEL repository. cool! 🙂

Configuring VPN:
Now I can add a VPN connection using CentOS Network Manager.
With the plugins installed, it now shows a VPN section with openVPN and pptp.

For me, I will just configure pptp for fxphd VPN.
Once connected, ifconfig will show ppp0.

Now I’ve got everything setup ready to install Katana!

Motori di rendering – Biased o Unibiased

20 aprile 2011 Lascia un commento

Salve a tutti ! A presto ! 🙂

Arriva V-ray 2.0

11 novembre 2010 4 commenti
